Favorite photographs from 2007

Here is a sampling of some of my personal favorite shots from 2007. After taking a quick look through these I realized that most of the animals are looking at/facing the camera. What is interesting about this is that I take all kinds of photographs: profiles, running shots, looking down, from behind, etc, but the ones I like the most? Sweet dog (and cat, and rat) faces looking right at you.

Happy Holidays!!! :-)

And that, my dear blog readers, is my last post of 2007. Have a terrific rest of the year and I will be back in 2008!

Isabel & Oliver pugs

I promised awhile back to put up a post with these guys' images, so here they are!

I don't need to say how much I love pugs, (ok- it's a lot!), hopefully these images speak for me.

yay- pug butts!

Oliver- showing me what he thinks of me sticking my camera in his face.

Is Isabel one of the cutest pugs you have ever seen or what?

Curly tongue!

Oliver's mom told me he looks like he is straight off the short bus when he runs. I quickly learned she was right. He is so funny, woohoo...

Yes, Isabel IS one of the cutest pugs you have ever seen.

Oliver looks like a Star Wars character in this next shot, does he not?

Ok, Oliver is pretty gosh darn cute too.

Love the puggie pies!!

American Dreamer documentary film sneak peek

Awhile back I wrote this post detailing a documentary film I am being featured in titled 'American Dreamer'.

Things got busy and I neglected to ask the director for a sneak preview. I was delighted when I received an email earlier this week with a link to a film clip of Fergie and I.

This clip essentially has two parts to it: the first part which is for the (upcoming) American Dreamer documentary series, and the 2nd part which is a marketing vehicle for the Seattle University Entrepreneurship Clinic, of which I am a client.

I have to say it's really a trip to see myself on film, but even I got a bit choked up when I watched it. Sometimes when I am really busy, and things are going all awry, it's easy to forget why I do this and why I love it so much.

Click here to view film clip.

Enjoy!

Ziggy & Tina

It pains me deeply to leave this post.

You see, the big beautiful brindle boy in these photos is Ziggy. Although you really couldn't tell save a slight limp, Ziggy was sick when we did the shoot (something that everyone was aware of) and he died just 48 short hours after our session.

Although not a surprise, given the fact that he had bone cancer, and knowing from personal experience that this type of cancer takes big dogs very very quickly (we're talking days or weeks instead of months), his mom's email notifying me of his passing 2 days later still broke my heart into pieces.

Even though we had just a short couple of hours together, his sweet spirit touched me in a way I will never forget. He reminded me so much of Fergie it was uncanny; the way he gently but insistently nudged my hand telling me not to stop petting him, the way he moved his body, the way he cocked his head when talked to, the look in his eyes.

Still looking at his photos now I feel like I know him; like I already knew him. It's hard to explain and probably sounds somewhat woo-woo, but it's there, and this boy will never be forgotten by me, and certainly not by those who knew and loved him. I feel, at least I hope, that I will see him again someday.

This first shot was a happy accident. My Canon was going wacko on me at the beginning of the shoot (ok it was probably user error) but I decided to keep a couple of funky shots of Ziggy.

This is Ziggy's little sister Tina. The camera loved her. She was a little bit shy but every time I turned around she was near me smiling. Love Tina.

Ziggy had a great time at our shoot as he was allowed to run free on their property in Maple Valley, something he was unaccustomed to as the yard isn't fenced. He was sooo happy, as you can tell from this shot.

You see that look in Ziggy's eyes in the shot below? That is totally him, and one of the reasons why I so quickly fell in love with his gentle soul.

Tina has propeller ears. Or flying nun ears. Whichever you prefer.

I love how Ziggy is color-coordinated with his favorite chair.

Tina gives good smile, even when that is the only part of her that is in focus.

RIP sweet Ziggy.

New Decopaw feature- Yax-Belle

This is a good example of what can be done with a pre-existing image. I loved this shot of Yax laying with her head on the log.

This is called "Yax Delicate Falling Leaves" and is inspired by the Texas countryside near Austin, where Yax and her family live.

I shipped off Yax's canvas to her mom last Monday. Hopefully her hubby won't stumble upon my blog in the next two days (chances of that happening? very slim), because it's a Christmas gift for him.

To read more about the new feature (which is now officially on my 'very favorites ever' list) go here.

Nikita & Wanda

Before I leave on my 2-week break I would like to leave my lovely blog audience with some content-rich image posts, starting with Nikita and Wanda.

These guys live in Tacoma, and you may recognize them from my recent 'sneak peek pics' post.

Nikita is the young age of 14 and Wanda is quickly gaining on him at 12. Nikita is the silvery-grey shepherd mix, Wanda the rust colored lab basset mix.

They were darling dogs both of them, and were a joy to photograph. We also lucked out with the weather, which doesn't always happen at this time of year.

The kitty was pretty adorable too, and he kept cracking me up because he wasn't afraid of the camera until the shutter fired, at which point he sort of startle in the most comical way, and then run away quickly, then come right back for more. I don't remember what his name is (I kept forgetting during the shoot too, sorry buddy!) but I do know that it is a foreign word for 'short bus', hee hee hee.

All 3 of them were very photogenic, especially Wanda, who was also somewhat of a ham. I wish I could show you what her ears really looked like. She is a basset hound mix (her owners think) and her ears were just ginormous, which you can really only see in the shot with her head tilted backward.

And Nikita? Well, I think just looking at him in his images speaks volumes about this big gentle loving boy. Pure sweetness and light.

I'm done!

Today I finished with my last 3 clients, and I just had my last holiday client leave moments ago from making their pickup.

10 days ago I think I had something like 22-24 clients I still needed to finish with, and remember that on a Monday I was starting to lose my mind a little bit. I don't normally get too anxious because I have enough experience to know when my 'time to panic' deadlines are, and usually try to stay well away from them, but this year it came down to the wire on some things and I started to sweat.

But slowly but surely I narrowed it down to 17 clients.

Then 11.

Then just the final 4.

Then 3.

Then............ done!! Yipee!!

There is nothing better than the sense of both accomplishment and relief I feel right now and am thrilled that all went well (ok, not without a couple of total brain farts on my part), and am looking very forward to spending some quality time off the next two weeks (and of course, volunteering for Pasado's on Christmas!).

YAY!! Whew.....

Pasado's Safe Haven- Home for the HOWLidays Christmas day event

I am so excited!

I just got word back from the volunteer coordinator at Pasado's Safe Haven that I get to spend Christmas morning taking food and supplies to needy pets, woohoo!

The event is called Home for the HOWLidays, and it brings Christmas to needy pets who may otherwise not have a Christmas.

Over 100 volunteers in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties get together and bring donated food, coats, treats, beds, flea medication, other supplies and even a promise of medical care to some of the most destitute of pet owners in our area.

These are often pets who don't have doghouses or beds, who have never sported a fancy fleece coat like our dogs have, who haven't experienced the luxury of toys or other pet products we all take for granted every day. And not because their owners don't care or don't love them (on the contrary), it's just because they lack the financial and social resources to provide for their pets.

And before you go getting all in a huff and saying that people who can't afford a pet shouldn't have one, let me say this.

Humans and animals have had a deep bond for thousands of years, long before we had insulated houses or flea collars or grooming shops or fancy dog clothes. We survived together and loved each other and made the best with what we had. We have always, and will always, have an inextricable bond, a bond not broken by socioeconomic challenges.

Besides, just because many of us are fortunate enough to live 'on the grid' and be regular consumers of (often times expensive) pet products doesn't make us any better than or different than, those who can't.

Hopping down off my high-horse now, I am so excited to go and do this.

I have been wanting to ever since attending the CityDog Magazine holiday party at Seattle's W Hotel on December 5th, which was a fundraiser for Pasado's Home for the HOWLidays event. That party really got me thinking.

Now here is the long story, if you want the short version, skip to the end.

It has always been an important part of my business to give back. I donate a couple thousand dollars worth of products and services every year to pet rescue organizations, often times when I myself am financially strapped, because this is so personally meaningful to me. I fully believe in adopting a pet over buying one, and I believe we as human beings have an obligation to care for these animals that WE have domesticated.

I have also always had a very humanitarian spirit, something I get from my parents.

I also saw the movie Blood Diamond a couple of months ago and I swear it changed my life.

Before, and especially since then, I have felt a burning desire to do something to make a difference on a global scale. I don't know that I would be a pet photographer forever. Although I know that my work is deeply meaningful to my clients I just don't know if 20 years from now I will have felt like what I was doing was making a real difference in the world, something that is really important to me.

So I have been grappling with how I can be a better consumer, a more socially sensitive member of society and not feel guilty being an American, and make choices every day that take steps in improving this world.

Participating in the Pasado event on Christmas Day is just one little step in the right direction.

On Christmas morning at 9am I will be meeting up with my friend Susannah and a bunch of other like-minded volunteers and we will load our cars and vans and trucks up with supplies and head out to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

I consider it a small sacrifice to give up a half of a day with my family on Christmas to participate in this event and feel so fortunate that I have this opportunity.

So there is the long story, the short story is: I love pets, I like to make a loving difference in the lives of the truly needy, and I have the energy, and time to give. What more reason is there?

SO, if you are reading this, and you are thinking: "hey, maybe I should think about doing that" and you can stand to be away from home on Christmas day from 9am until 2pm doing something really loving, go to the Pasado's Website here, and email the volunteer coordinator Yvonne.
If you'd like to participate but can't be there in person, you can make a donation for a Costco or other gift card, which will help purchase much needed pet supplies. Details can be found at the bottom of the page linked to above.

Lastly, if you are looking for a last-minute gift suggestion for the person who already has everything, and don't want to go to the mall and know it's too late to buy something online, consider going to the Christmas Gift Catalog on Worldvision.com and making a donation purchase in the recipient's name. You can even download and print a personal gift card to give to the recipient detailing the donation you made for them. Easy as pie!

I personally think there is no better gift to give on Christmas than a goat. :-)

SO, with that all being said, I need to go call Susannah and give her the good news!!

Tagged- times 2!!

While I have been busy as a bee in my little Cowbelly workshop (my home office if you want to get technical), I have been tagged by my lovely web friends, not once but twice.

The first time by Melissa Langer, and the 2nd time by Kathy Weller.

Melissa tagged me to share 5 little-known things about myself, and Kathy tagged me to share my top 25 favorite movies.

Starting in order: here are 5 things about me that you may not know:

1. When I was 17 I flew alone to Ketchikan Alaska to work in a fishing cannery. Among the things that happened were:
  • I fell in love with a fisherman.
  • Took a hike up a shale mountain in a lightning storm. (Ok, it was right before the storm happened, then we got the hell out of there).
  • Slipped on an oily floor and hit my head on a steel door, resulting in a concussion.
  • Developed pnemonia 10 days later. It was one of the darkest times in my life and I still believe I saw some scary spirits lurking around. Either that or I had gone completely mad.
  • Still decided to stay for an extra month after everyone left, to help clean the cannery. In all my stay totaled 4 months.
2. I drive a green Subaru Outback that I bought on ebay.
3. I'm not a big fan of chocolate. Ok, I'll eat it if you give it to me, otherwise I never buy it.
4. I have been cutting my own hair for over 5 years.
5. I can't stand the smell of moth balls.

Now, the 25 movies. This is a toughie, but here goes. Probably in order of like, because my top favorites come to mind first.
  1. Trainspotting
  2. Sliding Doors
  3. Moulin Rouge
  4. The Professional
  5. Scent of a Woman
  6. Wizard of Oz
  7. The Usual Suspects
  8. Blood Diamond
  9. Night in the City
  10. The Butterfly Effect
  11. Austin Powers
  12. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Johnny Depp)
  13. The Ring
  14. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
  15. Oceans 11
  16. Memento
  17. Black Hawk Down
  18. Best in Show
  19. Walk the Line
  20. What's Eating Gilberty Grape
  21. The Nightmare Before Christmas
  22. The Fifth Element
  23. Summer of Sam
  24. Bridget Jones Diary
  25. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka
I tend to like pretty intense movies, but I also greatly appreciate ridiculous humor a la Austin Powers or I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.

NOW, since this tag game is getting a little bit confusing about who tagged who and with what, I am going to change things up a little.

I will tag the appropriate number of people, but with my own NEW tag.

My NEW tag is:

"if you could spend 30 days in one location (and only one location) anywhere in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go and why?"

I think we'd all like to be someplace else at this time of the year and (hopefully) it's a simple question for us busy folk to answer.

My answer? Fiji. On the beach. With froofie drink in hand. But I'd wait until the weather improves a little. According to weather underground it's hot but cloudy there right now. Why would I got to Fiji? Need you ask? Ok, since you did: being an A-type personality, I very rarely give my body and soul the opportunity to truly relax, and after the madness of the holidays this is what I need the very most. I feel that laying on a beach, soaking in the sun, doing absolutely nothing for 30 days would fit this bill nicely.

Here are the people I am tagging:

Jeannie Thompson- Boston Terriers Rock
Jill Warner- our furry family
Ashley Brown photography
Christine Edwards photography
Stephen Bobb- Fidojournalism

If I tagged you above, the rules are that you put a post on your blog answering the last (travel) question, then tag 5 other people to do the same by leaving a comment on their blog with a link back to yours.

Now, if you are reading this and I didn't tag you, let me know where YOU would like to go!

Just leave it as a comment at the end of the post (just click on where it says '3 [or whatever number] comments', all the way at the very bottom of this post under labels, and leave your answer. Be sure to say where you are presently so we have a basis for comparison.

Cmon, everyone join in! I really want to know where everyone would go and why. You can even post anonymously if you don't have a blog account!

I will then post everyone's answers as a new post after Christmas.

Yay!!

Have fun!

Sneak peek pics

There are so many new pictures that I want to share here, but don't have time as I am in full panic mode trying to get all of my work done and shipped before Christmas. 4 clients down, 17 more to go!!

At least all of the last canvases for my final 6 Decopaw art clients are on order with my printer and most of my prints will ship out today. Wait, I just remembered I have one more client to order art for!! Ahhhhhhhh! Ok, actually, this isn't a Christmas gift so I need to calm down a little.

Deep breaths....

But I did want to quickly share a few recent pics here to whet my lovely blog audience's whistle for a little bit. Note: these are all regular (non-gift) shoots so there is no danger of giving away surprises.

Enjoy!

Opportunities Abound!

A lot of really cool things have been happening recently to fabulous pet business gals I know, including myself.

You can call them opportunities, but I like to call them 'cool things'.

I never really felt like a quick "hey that's great- congrats!" email sufficed when I got the news, so I wanted to pay tribute to these cool things and officially congratulate the folks who are the recipients, here in this post.

Linda O'Neill, owner of Abby Creek Studios finally (I bugged her for months on this) brought home a new baby girl last month, a darling puppy that is. The pup's name is Maisie, and you will find lots of photos of her on Linda's blog. Maisie is beyond adorable and Linda is taking some really terrific shots of her in and near their home in Colorado. Yay Linda! Yay Maisie!

Nichole Smith, owner of Dane & Dane photography, just nailed a terrific gig with the W Hotel in Seattle to provide photography to their guests, in the form of a 'Whose Pet is Picture Perfect' featured hotel package through February 28th, 2008. Super cool Nichole! I look forward to seeing her shots of the guests pups.

Donna Angevine, owner of the fabulous Primp Doggy couture landed an opportunity so cool that I can't share any details on it here for another month (or two?) yet. I am beyond excited for Donna, and also excited that this opportunity may have a fringe benefit for yours-truly, and that I get to help Donna (in a little, small way) on her project. And Fergie gets to help too! I truly can't think of a more deserving person (Donna, not Fergie. Although Fergie is a deserving person too. Nevermind).

As if this super secretive opportunity wasn't enough, Donna is having a live fashion show on KING-5 (major Seattle news channel) the morning of Wednesday December 19th (sometime between 8:30-9am?). And Fergie gets to be in that too! Yay Donna! Yay Fergie! Yay us! Be sure to tune in next week! Check the KING-5 website for details and showtimes.

Jill Beninato, owner of Sit. Stay. Smile. Photography and fellow dog artist, had a terrific write up today on the popular Dog Art Today blog. What I think is even cooler is this informative and interesting newspaper article on Jill that was published in the Virginia Beach paper Hampton Roads. I love this article.Way to go Jill!

Kathy Weller, owner of the awesome Kathy Weller Pet Portraiture, recently had this seriously rockin interview on Design Inspiration, a cool blog for designers and illustrators. Kathy's interview is proof that she is one of the most talented people I know. I stand in awe of you Kathy. :-)

Brandie Ahlgren, illustrious editor and founder of CityDog Magazine, a terrific Seattle and West Coast lifestyle magazine for humans and their dogs, is going to be on KOMO News-4's Northwest Afternoon later this week to talk about dog friendly holiday entertaining, stocking stuffers and gift ideas. The show tapes tomorrow, December 12th and will air a few days later. Check KOMO's website or the CityDog Blog for actual date and time. Looking forward to seeing it and getting ideas on what to get Fergie!

Lori Fields, owner of the Fields Group, and Pet Lounge, (where you can find my art and photography available for mobile downloads by the way), just gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Dylan. Here's to your first good night sleep with the little one Lori!

Andrea Murphy, friend, owner of the new That's the Spot massage therapy for dogs, and proud owner of Gypsy, the namesake for my business, recently started working with Spawzdog, a doggie daycare, fitness center and aquatic exercise center, offering swim therapy and massage to the clients dogs. Congrats Andrea on this great new opportunity!

Jamie Pflughoeft (that's me for those who are new), owner of Cowbelly Pet Photography and creator of Decopaw Design art, was recently featured in a stellar Merryvaluation on Pamperedpuppy, one of my favorite websites for all things dog. I love Angie McKaig, I love Merry the pug, and I only hope that one day I can be in Toronto to meet them in person. Be sure to check out Angie's photos of Merry on her blog; she recently got a new camera and her photography is getting really, (really) good.

Then there's the aforementioned possible (maybe, hopefully) fringe-benefit opportunity through Primp Doggy. I don't know that I'd call it an opportunity, it's just a very cool thing that a dear friend is doing by including me in her opportunity in a very cool way. I will post more on it in the future to update y'all.

Also, I just got word from the aforementioned Lori Fields (petlounge.com) last week that she will be receiving her first royalty check from her mobile content distributors at the end of the quarter. What this means is that I will be getting MY first royalty check from her in the first quarter of the year for downloads of my art and photography images from 2007. Yippee! I was beyond thrilled to learn that out of the top 5 most downloaded images, mine were 4 of the 5! This project has been a long time coming but it may finally start paying off for both of us. I'm so grateful to Lori for all of the hard work she has done on this project and am excited to see what 2008 holds in store.

Lastly, last week Fergie and I did a photo shoot here in our home for a really cool article that will be coming out in the winter issue of CityDog Magazine. I didn't do the photography- my very talented friend Nichole of the aforementioned Dane & Dane did as she does a lot of editorial photography for the magazine, and I tell ya, work never felt so much like fun, lol. I'm super excited (and admittedly a little nervous- I feel I do best behind the camera) to see the article when it comes out in January. For those living in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, look for it on newsstands! (Or better yet: subscribe). Also look for my new Decopaw ad in the same issue. It's super purty and has a really unique blue frame around it. You won't see it anywhere else.

But I have to say that, even given all of these cool opportunities (I can only speak for myself here but I am venturing to guess that my friends above agree), it's the opportunity to work with my client's dogs (and cats) every day that is the most satisfying of all. In the past 2 weeks I have photographed a handful of dogs who have just a very short time left on this earth, and the experiences working with them are rewarding on a level that no press or recognition ever will be.

If it weren't for the many loving dog and cat owners in the Seattle area and beyond who commissioned me for photography and art I wouldn't be where I am today or be in the position of having these cool things fall into my life.

I deeply thank all of my clients and friends who have supported me over the past 4+ years and have helped make my little business possible. And thank you to you my many blog followers!

Here's to an equally fabulous 2008!

LOVE YOU ALL!

Google's 'I'm feeling lucky'

Try this:

Go to google's homepage: http://www.google.com/

Type in the term:

pet photography

(no need for quotes)

click the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button (to the right of 'Google Search')

What do you get?

This is what google says about the button:

The "I'm Feeling Lucky" button takes you directly to the first web page Google returned for your query. You will not see the other search results at all. An "I'm Feeling Lucky" search means you spend less time searching for web pages and more time looking at them.

Very cool.

Titan Boston Terrier chillin in da crib

Super short on time. Much, much work and very little time. Sorry for the sparse posts lately. And my apologies to those who are waiting for a reply phone call or email from me. I promise to reach out to you tomorrow!

If anyone knows of a good cloner (one who can make copies of you), please forward their info on to me. Or suggestions on how to turn 24 hours into 36 would be nice too. I just need it for the next 3 weeks. Thank you.

This is Titan. I photographed him recently at his home on Queen Anne. He is funny. His photos have gone to my head. See for yourself. I need to sleep. Titan is cute. He gives good smile.

This post is for Rob and all of the nice folks on woofboard.com who have been following my blog.

I don't have words to express how much I love his little lip......... nope, words escape me.

I told you Titan's shots have gone to my head. I am hoping the Boston Terrier owners appreciate this shot.

Heyyy, now that's a smiley dog. My kinda canine.

I told you I needed to sleep.

"Whoa there little buddy!" Titan did this, briefly, very briefly, as I was bending down to put my camera away at the end of the shoot. I stood up again and said "ok- go". And he gave me one more fleeting 'high ten'. Which was really more like a wave. Like he was flagging down a UPS truck filled with doggy biscuits. Or steak.

I swear this wasn't a trick of his. It just happened. Is this a Boston Terrier thing? Check out the little froggy legs. I love it.

Have a boston terrierrific week!

Pamperedpuppy review of Decopaw Design in December 2007 issue

Words can't describe how happy I am at this moment. Why?

For those who don't know what this means, my custom Decopaw art was selected for review by the popular (and fabulous) pamperedpuppy.com, the 'web's largest online magazine and shopping portal devoted to luxury lifestyles for dogs'.

Each month pamperedpuppy selects a handful of products to review for it's 'Merryvaluations' program. Merry is the adorable company mascot, and she gets to approve doggie products and throw in her two-cents worth.

The art review program is for Merry's mommy, the talented, sweet as pie, and uber cool Angie McKaig. It's Angie's two cents that comprise the review. Of course, Merry obliges her mom by sitting pretty for a photo next to the completed art piece, lol.

Here is the backstory on this review:

Way back in the early fall (late summer?) of 2006 Angie and I were emailing on a totally unrelated subject, when she mentioned to me that she was starting a beta program of artists reviews for the monthly Merryvaluations program, and asked if I would be interested in having my Decopaw art reviewed. "Are you kidding?" I thought. "Absolutely of course YES!". I felt so honored that she would even think of me, given the hundreds of talented pet artists out there.

So around this time last year we tried to start the process. She and I were both very busy so we played a little game of email tag, then decided it would be best for both of us to wait until 2007.

We reconnected again in February of this year, then went back and forth through email again for a couple of months and then started the process in May.

To make a very long story short, essentially life got in the way for both of us this summer, but we finally finished our art commission and I shipped off Merry's canvas (that's her in the art- how cute is she?!) to Angie in late September. Here is her winning proof, and two others that I designed. There is a 4th proof but it is a red Christmas one and just doesn't go with the pink in this post, lol.

Angie planned to post the review on December 1st, which, if I could have picked any day of the year to have my art reviewed, would have been the day. Just in time for the holidays, yipee!

Needless to say I am beyond thrilled with both the review and that I even had the opportunity in the first place. I actually cried when I read the review, and believe this is hands-down the best thing that has happened to Cowbelly/Decopaw in all of 2007.

I am so excited about this review and even more excited to share it with you, my blog audience.

And if you are a pamperedpuppy fan and have stumbled over here from my website, welcome! Hang around for awhile. You'll find all kinds of doggie photos, colorful pet art, and other fun stuff on this blog. Feel free to leave comments, let me know you are here, ask questions, or just gander to your heart's content.

Yay for pamperedpuppy!!! :-)
